Lookaside Input Buffer for Packet Switching

The lookaside input buffer disclosed here improves the performance of packet-switched data communications networks, particularly high-performance networks used to implement parallel computer systems. The addition to each input line of a lookaside buffer able to hold one complete message makes separate clear-to-send outputs possible. Performance is enhanced by increased maximum throughput reduced latency in networks operating at near maximum throughput, and, if the maximum throughput, is constant, decreased internal storage requirements. The new concept can be applied to networks of any topology [l]. The following discussion compares implementation  and performance of two identical eight-way Omega networks with two-way switches.
