A pallet intended for an assembly, to be assembled by robot operation and other external assembly operation, is moved by a belt conveyor to a robot assembly operation station where the pallet is accurately located and clamped for robot assembly operations. During an interval in such operations, clamps and a guide for the pallet are removed and the pallet moved away orthogonally by a chain conveyor for other external assembly operations, after which the pallet is returned for location and clamping during further robot operations. A pallet (not shown) is transported by a series of belt conveyors 1, of which one is shown, onto a belt conveyor 2 at a robot assembly operation station within the envelope of the gripper fingers of a robot (not shown).
