Highly integrated semiconductor devices are sensitive to alpha particle bombardment. Alpha particles are emitted in limited amounts by various ceramic and other materials that conventionally make up the semiconductor package. The bombardment of sensitive key areas of the semiconductor device by alpha particles can disrupt operation and cause errors. This compound is located between a semiconductor device 10 solder bonded to substrate 12 to protect the device against alpha particle bombardment. The compound is injected or otherwise introduced between the device 10 and substrate 12 to protect the device against alpha particles emitted from the substrate 12.
