Typically, a user begins using a program after customizing profile settings required by the program. If a new, updated version of the program becomes available, the user may have to again customize profile settings. Also, in a distributed system, it is necessary to transfer profile settings from node to node. These features make a system hard to use. What is needed is a way to provide the user with a mechanism for retaining profile settings while upgrading programs or to transfer profile settings within a distributed system without having to customize these settings at every node. To overcome this problem, a program associated with a profile category is provided. This program is executed by the user before installing a new version of the program to be installed.
