Many applications using "intelligent" credit cards (SMART CARDS) require a high level of security to prevent unauthorized access to the system. One procedural security method requires a mutual exchange of encrypted secret keywords between the SMART CARD and a SECURE TERMINAL INTERFACE MODULE (STM). The secret keywords, residing in both the SMART CARD and the STM, require protection. The STM provides physical protection of its secret keyword by storing it in a volatile memory surrounded by a protective shield which connects power to the memory. If the shield is penetrated, power to the memory is dropped and the secret keyword immediately disappears. The figure shows a schematic representation of the STM.
