General-Purpose Interface Bus Data Transfer Simulator

This article describes a simulator to provide general-purpose interface bus (GPIB) data and handshaking signals with adjustable timing in order to measure performance of GPIB-compatible devices. The circuit arrangement disclosed herein provides handshaking signals on a GPIB with adjustable timings and data rates up to the limit of 1 megabyte per second, which can be used for test and performance measurements on GPIB-compatible devices. Specifically, this arrangement emulates a device performing data transfers using the three-wire handshake which consists of eight data lines and three handshake lines, data valid (DAV), not data accepted (NDAC), not ready for data (NRFD), and specified time relationships between them.
