A method is described to allow the operator of an interactive text processing system to enter variable keystrokes while playing back a set of keystrokes that were previously recorded employing the keystroke and playback record functions. In record mode, the operator may press the Alt + 5 key to display a window and select from a displayed window pause-keystrokes not recorded. The pause event is stored in memory. No keystrokes are recorded until the operator presses the Alt + 5 key and selects resume- record keystrokes. In playback, the occurrence of a pause entry in the keystroke file produces a break in the keystroke playback. The system alerts the operator, who may enter variable keystrokes.
