A method is described which allows the detection of error and status messages during keystroke playback so that the operator has the ability to correct error situations and continue keystroke playback. Autokey playback allows automated playback of previously recorded keystrokes. The feature that is new is the method of error message and status message detection and analysis as shown in the flow chart. While keystrokes are played, there are two levels of error analysis performed. At the highest level, the first position of a message line is monitored following the playback of every keystroke. More precisely, if the first position changes to any character other than the normal space, then a procedure is entered to perform further analysis of the message ID.
