Abstract

The automatic assembly of components requires the rapid and inexpensive movement of article carriers from station to station. A readily adjustable and flexible edge driving carrier handler is shown in the figure. The article carrier 1, shown in outline, is pushed into contact with rim drive wheels 2 which are mounted on movable drive assemblies 3. The presence of the carrier 1 is optically sensed and energizes a rotary actuator which is connected to a gear drive 4 for engaging a pair of cranks 5 and 6 which are linked to the movable drive assemblies 3. The gear drive 4 rotates the cranks 5 and 6 until the drive assemblies 3 supporting the rim drive wheels 2 are moved into a position where the rim drive wheels 2 can engage the outside edges of the article carrier 1.
