In the manufacture of hard disk files, cover-to-base attachment methods vary widely for many reasons. On some files the cover is made of sheet steel in order to keep the file dimensions as small as possible. With such a design requirement in mind, it was decided to use a type of clip to attach the cover to the base casting. The clip illustrated in the figure was designed to require no special tool for installation, maintain a predictable load on the cover and, once snapped into place, be tamper resistant. This was done by designing a bracket 2 which is welded to the cover 3 in three places.
