Abstract

The invention, Save/Restore ("S/R") Initial Program Load ("IPL"), is a method used to save an image of an operating system after the control program and any associated subsystems of a computer system have performed their initialization. This initialization, even for a given computer, is potentially different for each customer's environment. The invention permits an image-save-type IPL, in spite of these potential variations in initialization. After a user has configured his computer system (told the operating system about the number and location of terminals, etc.), and performed any performance tuning (specified which programs should be resident, etc.), he then can request a "Save IPL" which saves an image of the system. Subsequent IPLs can then be "Restore IPLs" which execute substantially faster than the Save IPL.
