An arrangement is described to manually and automatically control access to indirect annotation text in a system that supports document interchange with other systems. This arrangement allows the operator to specify a collection of normal body text pages or an annotation within some other document. This document may be within the same document library as the document being created/edited, or it may be in any other document on any system that can support document interchange with the operator's system. The design specifies a number of procedures that allow the operator and the system to control this complex process of accessing annotation text from outside sources. It should be noted that the outside source may be the document being created/edited, as well. 1.
