Abstract

The Butterworth filter is the accepted standard data channel filter configuration used in low cost to medium cost hard file disk drives. This filter configuration, composed of a collection of discrete components (capacitors, inductors and resistors), provides the proper passband magnitude and phase response necessary for optimum file performance. A typical 5-pole Butterworth filter and low-pass network used for hard file applications is shown in Fig. 1. The hybrid Butterworth filter module applies thick-film hybrid packaging technology to low-end disk drive data channel filters. The hybrid Butterworth filter module, using the circuit configuration of Fig. 1, provides an alternative to the discrete component version that results in a significant reduction of the required card area.
