A method is described to control transfer of data when a Personal Computer (PC) is emulated on a Displaywriter by the Cluster Attach Program (CAP). The CAP provides emulation on the Displaywriter of the IBM Personal Computer's keyboard, display, and media. A special cable, connecting the Mag Card port on the Displaywriter to the asynchronous communication port on the PC, allows the two units to communicate using the asynchronous link. Commo is the name of a the program module that handles the actual transferring of information across the communication link. The like logical devices, i.e., keyboard, display and media on the Displaywriter and on the PC exchange information via Commo in order for the keyboard, display, and media of the Displaywriter to replace and to extend the keyboard, display, and media of the PC.
