Equipping an industrial vehicle (robot workpiece carrier) with one or more remotely controllable beacons permits determination of the location and attitude of the vehicle, and by inference the location and attitude of the cargo workpiece. The workpiece vehicle, shown super-simplified in the figure, is equipped with a prime mover or is moved by an external motive means, such as an assembly line, into the work envelope scanned by the industrial navigation system. Because the workpiece vehicle 1 or its cargo workpiece 2 may obscure a beacon 3, it is necessary to identify particular beacons to determine location and attitude of a workpiece.
