A ribbon shield for a line printer is constructed for easy mounting and self-retention on a support member. As shown in Fig. 1, a support member 10 has a retaining slot 11 with inner overhang surface 12 and outer side plate 13. Ribbon shield 14, as seen in Fig. 2, has an integral retention flap 15, which fits into slot 11 so that edge 16 abuts overhang 12 (Fig. 3). Shield 14 and flap 15 are made of an elastic material, such as a MYLAR* plastic sheet, such that the spring rate of the flap 15 and shield 14 are self-retaining in slot 11.
