This article relates to magneto-optical storage materials which are utilized in a system like that disclosed in U.S. Patent 3,949,387. Thin film media for magneto-optic data storage must have large magneto-optic (Faraday and Kerr) effects for high signal-to-noise ratio data read-out. A class of amorphous alloys with larger magneto-optic (MO) coefficients that the prior art alloys has been found which are based mainly on terbium-iron (Tb-Fe). The improved alloys consist of one of the light rare earths, such as cerium (Ce), praseodymium (Pr), or neodymium (Nd) in an amorphous alloy with iron (Fe) and/or cobalt (Co). In these alloys, it is possible to obtain a large contribution to the magneto-optic rotation from the rare earth element.
