Abstract

Fig. 1 is a schematic diagram of a system used to measure a fast rise time-short duration-low duty cycle current pulse. Both the current probe 10 and oscilloscope 12 must be isolated from the high voltage supply 14 and must have sufficient bandwidth to allow a good reproduction of the current pulse. Several problems arise if one is not careful when implementing the circuit. Refer to the equivalent circuit shown in Fig. 2. This circuit will be recognized as a parallel circuit consisting of an inductance L (the leads to the high voltage power supply), a capacitor C (the electrode and shield) and a resistor Rp (the stray shunting resistance or losses). At a frequency Wo which causes jwl to equal 1/jwl, the circuit will be parallel resonant and will consist of only Rp.
