This article describes an expandable digital switching and control system which allows the user to start with a small end office (Class 5) and grow as circumstances require. It offers advanced functions and superior reliability. In today's environment, telephone users are demanding more sophisticated services, in many cases equal to those supplied to business establishments. Trial systems are already underway in many countries for services, such as videotext, voice store and forward, electronic mail, etc., for the homeowner. All these advanced functions depend on the telephone network for both the support of the service, and in some cases providing the service. Referring to the drawings, Fig. 1 is a block diagram of the 10,000-line central office switch disclosed herein. Fig. 2 is a block diagram of the switch control.
