An improved barrel shifter is disclosed in Figs. 1 and 2 which includes the functional features of multiple-bit position shifting using a base four shifting increment, an exponent incrementing/decrementing feature, and a final cycle output signal feature. Fig. 1 illustrates a portion of a 64-bit shift register 10 which is divided into four sections 10a, 10b, 10c, etc. of 16 bits each. The control mechanism of Fig. 2 has control outputs which are connected to logic inputs shown in the shift register 10 of Fig. 1. The first functional feature of base four increment shifting can be illustrated as follows, in connection with Fig. 1.
