Magnetic Recording Disk File With Silicon Substrate Disk Containing Both Integrated Electronic Circuits and Magnetic Media

A magnetic recording disk file includes at least one recording disk which employs a silicon substrate. On one surface of the substrate a magnetic layer is deposited to form a recording surface, and on the other surface integrated electronic circuits are formed using semiconductor fabrication techniques. The electronics on the rotating disk(s) are coupled to the outside by transformers connected to external circuitry for power, command, and data input/output. As shown in the figure, the disk file includes two disks 10, 12 which have recording surfaces 14, 16, respectively, which are accessed by read/write heads attached to an actuator 15. The opposite surfaces 18, 20 of the disks have integrated circuits fabricated thereon.
