Abstract

When attaching magnetic tape to a reel hub it is essential that the attaching material not disturb the recording surface of the tape. This can be achieved if liquid, such as deionized, filtered water, is used as the attaching medium. The figure illustrates how a droplet of water can be accurately deposited on the tape end prior to contacting the reel hub and then used to attach the tape end to the hub. As shown in the figure, the end of the media or tape is raised by a wind extension arm into a droplet-receiving position. The water tank supplies a metered flow of water to a drop dispenser through the metering pump. The air cylinder moves the drop dispenser into contact with the tape end to deposit a drop on the tape end.
