A method is described for prompting the operator of an IBM Personal Computer to change the printwheel on the attached IBM 5218 printer. All prompting needed by the printer for operator intervention must be done by the printer by means of lights and a two-digit display on the front panel of the printer. For instance, there is a paper light and the two-digit display can tell the operator which drawer is out of paper when the paper light is on. A prompt command can be sent to the 5218 printer driver which tells it to stop for a printwheel change and to display a two-digit number to tell the operator which printwheel is needed. However, printwheels for the IBM 5218 printer are identified by a three-digit character set and by a three-digit typestyle.
