In electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) the spectrum signal has small absorption edges riding on an exponentially decaying, noisy background, making it very difficult to detect signals of elements present in low concentrations. An algorithm described herein based on the first derivative of an n-point, least-squares quadratic fit makes it possible to detect the small signals.
