Instrument for Testing Thin Films Such As Magnetic Tape

The instrument shown in the figure, hereinafter referred to as a viscoelastometer, is designed to perform hardness, creep, relaxation and scratch tests on thin film samples, such as magnetic recording tape and sputtered coatings used in magnetic heads. The instrument is capable of independently and variably controlling the load on the film and the penetration into the film. As shown in the figure, the sample 9 is mounted on an optical flat 8 which is supported on parallel flexure device 11. The parallel flexure device 11 provides pure vertical motion to the sample when driven by linear actuator 10. The flexure device 11 compensates for any possible axial misalignment.
