The present technique enables the movement of one of superimposed color images on a display screen quickly while maintaining the background images. To this end, "Display" area and "Save" area are defined in an APA (all-points-addressable) buffer comprising plural memory planes, e.g., R, G and B planes. The Save Area stores original graphic image data, for example, in its three planes. The Display Area initially stores the same graphic image data in its three planes. In addition, the Display area stores character image data, for example, in an additional plane, named "Priority" plane. Since color information of the character image is stored in the R, G and B planes of the Display Area, the original graphic image data in the Display Area are changed at bit positions corresponding to the character data.
