In microcoded machines some hardware or software facilities help in the microcode path analysis to track some unexpected events and consequently correct the program flow. These facilities may either be implemented by software or by hardware tools depending on the machine application type. In a realtime dedicated microprocessor, hardware support tools are preferably used in order not to impact the performances for non- functional reasons. In this kind of application a trade-off is made in order to minimize the hardware for product cost reasons, as described in this article. A program trace tool working on the microprocessor storage accessed data or code addresses or also adapter addresses is partially implemented in hardware with a complementary microcode assistance.
