A software independent error-checking, retry, and self-testing arrangement in a Device Adapter (DA) for a personal computer workstation is described. The DA provides the following three functions: (1) Implements a means of error checking and retry logic for providing high Reliability, Availability, and Serviceability (RAS) functions for all supported devices as well as commands to the adapter itself. The DA implements a means for logging device activity, retries, and error counts without consuming system processor and I/O bus bandwidth. When an unexpected condition has been detected by the DA at a device interface, the problem may not be with the device itself. Thus, the DA attempts to continue normal operations. The device error code information is logged as an "Incident.
