Bit-Encoded Compression Algorithm for Compressing Files on Diskette

A method is described for providing additional compression needed for display unit files on the diskette, while not increasing the load time or adding significant amounts of code for decompression. Data files on a diskette, which had already been compressed via a standard compression algorithm which compressed repeated character sequences, needed to be further compressed to make room on the diskette. This article describes a compression algorithm invented to further compress the data files on the diskette using a bit-encoding technique, which provides an average of 25-30% additional compression while adding very little, if any, additional time to the loading process and a minimal amount of decompression code.
