A water cooled multi-chip substrate that is to be operated for accelerated run-in is temporarily assembled with a special cooling hat that has a film resistance heater between the hat and the cold plate. The module is operated at a higher than normal temperature to force early life failures of module components. A temperature sensor is located in the hat or other suitable location, and a current regulator responds to the temperature signal from the sensor to supply current to the heater to keep the hat at a preselected temperature. Preferably, the temperature sensor is located just below the film resistance heater to monitor the temperature of the hat.
