A detection method for photothermal (PT) deflection spectroscopy utilizes two
coherent beams which probe the excited area of the sample and an adjacent
unperturbed area of sample.
These two coherent beams create an interference pattern on a detector.
Small changes in the optical path length and/or angle of deflection are caused by
the PT effect. These small changes are detected as substantial changes of the
An example of such a detection method can be described with the system
shown in the figure. A detecting laser beam 10 passes through a beam splitter
12 and the resultant two coherent beams pass through the phase shifter 14
across a sample 16 onto a photodetector 18. The area of the photodetector 18
probes a single interference fringe. By adjusting the phase shifter 14 no light
reaches the photodetector 18. By exciting the sample 16 under only one of the
coherent beams by a suitable energy source 20, the interference pattern
changes and light reaches the photodetector 18.
