Documents moving along document path A normally pass by leaf spring brake B by flexing the leaf spring as the documents pass. When it is desired to arrest a document, electromagnet C is activated, attracting magnetic material D attached to the end of the leaf spring brake. By maintaining electromagnet C in a state of weak energization, movement of magnetic material D by the passage of documents can be detected by change in the current flowing through magnet C.
