Protection of Rare Earth-transition Metal Magnetooptical Film From Reaction With Antireflection Coating

To prevent undesirable reaction between a magnetooptical film made of a rare earth and transition metal (RE-TM) alloy and a dielectric antireflection (AR) coating applied to its surface, the RE-TM film is subjected to a plasma anodization treatment which causes both the RE and TM in the alloy to be rapidly oxidized at the surface of the film before the film receives its AR coating. This inhibits the degrading type of reaction that results from slow oxidation or other slow reaction of the film surface with the AR coating when the coated magnetooptical film is produced in the conventional manner.
