The hand held serial printer 1 shown in the figure can be used t o print typewriter quality text on objects that can not be placed in a typewriter such as boxes, drawings, structural elements and the like. Text is applied to an object by moving the printer 1 in the direction of the arrow 2. The printer 1 has a rubber tired wheel 4 which has an integral first spur gear 6. When the printer 1 is moved in the direction of the arrow 2 on a surface 8 the tired wheel 4 rotates in the direction shown. The first spur gear 6 engages second spur gear 10. The second spur gear 10 is an integral part of a ribbon drive roller 12 and rotates the ribbon drive roller 12 in the direction opposite that of the tired wheel 4 as shown.
