During manufacture of magnetic recording tape which is designed for digital-data use, it is necessary to detect a cinch or fold in the tape which renders this section of the tape unusable. Such a fold causes deformation of the tape's polyester substrate, such that the tape-tensioning devices in a digital tape drive are not strong enough to cause the cinched area to pass over the magnetic recording head in a close transducing relationship.
