Abstract

Two fluxed pipes are positioned end to end with solder preform and a sleeve in position to form a conventional looking joint. The sleeve is made of a one-way shape memory alloy, which in its initial shape has two symmetrical halves that are each an outwardly flaring truncated cone. See Figure 1. When the assembly, consisting of two pipe ends surrounded by the solder preform and the sleeve, is heated, the sleeve returns to a smaller diameter cylindrical shape before the solder melts.
