The adherence of chromium dioxide water based ink to a polyester film may
be improved by coating the film with a thin layer of aluminum before coating the
film with the water based ink.
A polyester film was evaporatively coated with an aluminum layer between 80
and 120 angstroms thick. A chromium dioxide water based ink comprising black
chromium dioxide magnetic needle-like particles dispersed in deionized water
with a poly- acrylate dispersant and an aqueous polyester polyurethane binder
was then coated onto the aluminized surface of the polyester film. The chromium
dioxide particles are typically less than one micron in length and less than 0.1
microns in width. The amount of dispersant can vary between 0.5 to 5% of the
particle weight. A typical ink formulation may comprise 24.2 wt % chromium
dioxide particles, 0.44 wt % dispersant, 21.7 wt % binder and 54.6 wt %
