A method is described which provides a mechanism for the operator of an interactive draw graphics system to select any plane on a 3-D object. In accordance with this method, once the operator has selected the entire object, the cursor is moved onto any point of any visible plane and a select key or a mouse button is activated. The system will automatically highlight the topmost plane that that point can lie on. If that plane is not the one the operator intended to select, the select button is pressed again, and the next topmost plane is highlighted. Even if the plane is totally hidden, the system will outline it so it can be seen. This operation continues until the selected plane that the operator wants is highlighted.
