A method is described for displaying messages to the operator of an interactive information system. The system does not require consecutively issued messages to be queued, but still insures that the operator see important messages. With this method, a message is displayed in one of two ways. It can be displayed as an "immediate" message which is immediately displayed and is removed from the screen on the next keystroke. It can also be displayed as an "action" message. An action message looks no different from an immediate message when first displayed. However, if an "action" message is being displayed on the message line when message services receives another request to display a message, a blinking vertical rectangle appears on the message line replacing the arrow (>) that is normally there and a beep is sounded.
