There is a great deal of interest in incorporating organic dyes that have a high extinction coefficient in polymeric materials that otherwise would not be strongly absorbing at convenient laser wavelengths. Incorporating organic dyes in the polymeric materials allows the polymers to be laser etched. The dyes are chosen to have high extinction coefficients at the wavelength of the laser radiation and to be compatible with the polymer in terms of solubility and chemical inertness.
