A method is described which provides the operator of an inter- active graphic draw system with a graphic ruler to measure displayed graphic objects. The ruler is a predefined graphic object in the system that allows the operator to measure other graphic objects. After selecting the "create" option from the command bar, the operator selects the ruler selection from its pop-down menu. A ruler will follow the pointing cursor and it can be put down on the screen by selecting a cursor position on the display. The anchor of that ruler will be drawn at the point of the cursor. After creating the ruler, the operator can apply the rotate function to convert it into a ruler in any direction. The ruler is defined with inches on one side and centimeters on the other side.
