Ferrite Disk Substrate for Vertical Recording

With recent advances in ceramic processing technology, it is possible to produce large cross sections of fully dense ferrite. This solves some of the unique requirements necessary for a vertical recording disk substrate such as a high surface finish and soft magnetic properties. With current techniques, this replaces two or more processing steps and eliminates the eddy current and track wandering problem found on disks with permalloy underlayers.
