Abstract

There has been a detrimental tendency for molten toner to be pulled out of extruder 10 into vacuum line 12 along with the gases and liquids that the vacuum system is intended to remove. As the toner solidifies in the airflow pipe, vacuum gauge 13 downstream indicates the vacuum condition in the pipe rather than the actual poorer vacuum where it is needed at the extruder port 11. Thus, the need for cleaning is often unrecognized until a major repair is required. Since the appropriate negative pressure (vacuum) is determined by the thermodynamics of the materials and process, its magnitude cannot arbitrarily be reduced to avoid drawing off toner.
