Amorphous, Soft Magnetic Fe(80)B(20) Film With Ni Addition

Amorphous, thin films of about 80 atomic percent Fe and 20 atomic percent B are extremely soft magnetic materials and have a high saturation magnetization, but also a high magnetostriction Lambda/s/. To reduce the magnetostriction Lambda , Ni in the range of about 1.5 to 4.5 atomic percent is added to this compound for part of the iron percentage. This is effected in accordance with the formula (Fe/1-x/Ni/x/)/80/B/20, where x is between 0.015 and 0.045. The magnetostriction Lambda/s/, the anisotropy field strength H/k/, and the coercive field strength H/c/ are thus reduced by factors of about 2, 4, and 10, respectively. Such results are of particular advantage when used in thin film heads and magnetic bubble stores.
