Abstract

The main advantages a light pen has over other pointing devices are object identification (ID) and local highlighting. These two advantages are closely related. Object identification refers to the ability to return an object identifier (instead of simply an X-Y coordinate) to the application. Local highlighting gives the user confirmation of the object he has selected before the object ID is sent to the host.
