A supermarket system reads bar codes printed on products, such as product 10, as those products move past a scan window 12 at a checkout stand 14. The scanning system Includes a laser 16 for generating a thin beam of coherent light, scan generating optics 18 for directing the laser beam through a scanning pattern covering the scan window 12, and a photomultiplier tube (PMT) 20 topped by the filter 22 which selectively transmits reflected laser light while blocking ambient light. Electrical signals generated by the photomultiplier tube 20 are processed in a data processing system 24 which, among other things, determines correct product prices and drives a printer to create a customer record.
