Self Adjusting Data Rate Control

A method for regulating widely varying data rates in a control unit across a channel/control unit interface. The control unit includes a programmable element, a data rate limitable automatic data transfer path, and means for dynamically attaching selected pairs of asynchronous demand/response type channel and device interfaces to respective ends under programmable element control. Method steps comprise (1) ascertaining the device type to be attached and its maximum instantaneous data rate and (2) inserting the limiting value in the path at a time preceding the first data transfer through the prospective device connection. Significantly, the attached devices should not have their data moved to or from a device at a rate higher than their intrinsic rate for an appreciable time.
