Films of the organic dye hydroxy squarylium cast from n-propyl amine solutions have been found to be highly amorphous and have enhanced absorption in the 750-850 nanometer region of the optical spectrum. These properties, and the normally broad, high absorption of this dye in the visible, result in films with high photovoltaic and photothermal efficiencies, compared to other organic dyes.
