The present system is directed to displays, such as gas panel, which do not require any periodic refresh. In such systems it is conventional to store the character fonts for the display terminal in a local read-only store. However, there may be other more rarely used character fonts which should be available for the occasional use on the display panel. To store such fonts locally would produce an undesirable significant increase in the need for local storage space. It is proposed here to store such rarely used fonts remotely from the display terminal in what may be called a "library" having several of such fonts which may be readily shared by a plurality of remote gas panel terminals.
