Abstract

In an automatic feeder system. whether configured to feed one document at a time or multiple documents in a "shingled" fashion from a stack of documents, it is usually necessary to provide downstream of the primary feeder a secondary separator/restraint feeder to ensure that multiple document feeds do not occur so that the documents are fed in the proper sequential order downstream of the aforementioned separator/restraint feeder. Present automatic feeder systems use sensors upstream and/or downstream of the separator/restraint feeder to sense the presence of a document in the vicinity thereof. This sense signal is generally used to control the normal force applied to the stack of documents to be fed and/or to stop the feeding operation.
